Pain of Perfectionism

What is perfectionism?

It is a personality trait characterized by a persistent pursuit of flawlessness, setting excessively high expectations/standards, and severe self-criticism.

Perfectionism has become a common topic in modern culture, in areas like job interviews and social media; however, it is often misunderstood because it is linked to productivity and self-improvement. While it may look appealing on the surface, there is an important aspect that is often overlooked: the emotional pain it causes.

Perfectionism is an adaptive survival strategy developed in childhood to secure love and safety in environments where acceptance feels conditional based on performance. This is an internalized pattern that continues into adulthood, where it acts as a limiting, protective, false self that can be unlearned to foster authentic connections.

Perfectionism is a painful experience of internalized conditional self-worth, where an individual acts as their own harsh critic, withholding acceptance unless strict standards are met.
