Licensed Professional Counselor, NCC, CCTP, SEP (She/hers)

I specialize in trauma-informed therapy for individuals seeking to feel more grounded, connected, and at ease in their lives and relationships. My work is especially supportive for those who feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stuck in old patterns, disconnected from their bodies, or impacted by past experiences that continue to show up in the present.
My approach is holistic and nervous-system-focused, integrating somatic interventions, Somatic Experiencing® (SE), attachment-based therapy, mindfulness, neuroscience, breathwork, and talk therapy. Together, we move at a pace that feels safe and respectful, helping you build greater awareness, resilience, and capacity for regulation.
I prioritize creating a compassionate, non-judgmental space where your experiences are honored and where healing can unfold through a supportive therapeutic relationship. I believe meaningful change happens when you feel seen, understood, and supported—not pushed.
I am an affirming ally to the LGBTQIA+ community and am committed to providing care that is inclusive, respectful, and attuned to your unique identity and lived experience.
If you’re considering therapy and wondering whether this might be a good fit, I invite you to reach out. You don’t have to navigate this alone.

I bring a broad and grounded background to my work as a therapist, shaped by years of experience supporting individuals and families across schools, community mental health settings, and private practice. I hold two Master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University and spent over seven years working as a school counselor in the Yuma area before transitioning fully into clinical work. My experience across diverse and high-need environments has taught me the importance of meeting each person with care, patience, and respect for their unique story.
I specialize in trauma-informed therapy and am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional with advanced training in working with complex trauma and PTSD. My approach is rooted in Somatic Experiencing® as a certified practitioner (SEP) and is informed by attachment-based and nervous-system-focused care. I am trained in EMDR and Dynamic Attachment Re-patterning experience (DARe), and I integrate additional modalities such as Brainspotting, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness practices, and hypnosis. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method, I tailor our work to your needs, pacing sessions in a way that feels collaborative, supportive, and safe.
In addition to my clinical practice, I have spent over 20 years teaching psychology at the university level. I currently serve as a Psychology Professor at Northern Arizona University. This background supports my ability to explain complex concepts in accessible ways and to help clients better understand their nervous systems, emotional patterns, and paths toward healing.
At the heart of my work is a belief in the power of a compassionate, trusting therapeutic relationship. I strive to create a space where you feel seen, respected, and supported as we work together toward greater balance, resilience, and connection. My goal is to help you move forward at a pace that honors both your strengths and your experiences.

A little bit about me. I’m a BIPOC therapist, a first-generation immigrant, who provides safe spaces for BIPOC people, neurodivergent folks, and people from the LGBTQIA+ Community. When I’m not practicing therapy, I’m spending time with family, traveling, reading about psychology, attending trainings, creating content on my Instagram page @thisisyolandarenteria and Tiktok @thisisyolandarenteria, teaching Psychology students at Northern Arizona University, participating in speaking events, or writing.
According to research, one of the biggest regrets people have in life is not being true to themselves. I help people find themselves, re-wire their brain and live a more authentic and aligned life.
I hope this gives you a little idea of my work and who I am, I look forward to working with you!

I graduated in 2009 with my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and in 2013 with my Master’s in Community Counseling. I graduated believing I had all the tools I needed to help others and soon realized I didn’t know as much as I thought.
My internship served as a grounding experience in understanding that if I really wanted to help others, I had to commit to be a life-long learner. This realization has led me to be on the journey of constant self-discovery, as well as knowledge and skill acquisition. I have training in Trauma from the Arizona Trauma Institute, I’m trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting I & II, Safe and Sound Protocol, and I’m a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) in training. I’m also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arizona and a National Certified Counselor.
Through training, reading, and doing my personal work, I’ve come to understand that everything about human beings makes sense when we understand it in the context of their life experiences.
Through understanding the brain, mind, and body, I help people make sense of their automatic body reactions, responses, body sensations, thoughts, and behaviors. When someone starts understanding that everything about them is a product of their current wiring, which is based on genes and life experiences (including familial, societal and cultural), they can begin building more compassion towards themselves, gain the tools they need to change, and create lasting change.

have dedicated my career to supporting individuals and families who have experienced trauma, violence, and life challenges. Early in my work, I provided psychological care at shelters in Mexico for families affected by domestic abuse and for children experiencing homelessness, helping them build hope, resilience, and a path toward a better future. I also worked at the Baja California Institute of Psychiatry, focusing on addiction prevention. There, I led group therapy sessions using a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, teaching coping skills, positive parenting strategies, and psychoeducation to children, adolescents, and adults.
Living in the Netherlands for three years gave me the opportunity to experience different cultures and perspectives, which has deepened my appreciation for diversity and informed my culturally sensitive approach to therapy. I strive to understand each person’s unique strengths and experiences without judgment, stereotypes, or assumptions.
I am continually expanding my knowledge in trauma, somatic interventions, and attachment-based work to provide the most effective support. My clinical work is supervised by Mily Gomez, ensuring high-quality, thoughtful care for every client.
