Yolanda Renteria

Licensed Profesional Counselor, CCTP, SEP (She/her)

Bilingual: Spanish and English

A little bit about me. I’m a BIPOC therapist, a first-generation immigrant, who provides safe spaces for BIPOC people, neurodivergent folks, and people from the LGBTQIA+ Community. When I’m not practicing therapy, I’m spending time with family, traveling, reading about psychology, attending trainings, creating content on my Instagram page @thisisyolandarenteria and Tiktok @thisisyolandarenteria, teaching Psychology students at Northern Arizona University, participating in speaking events, or writing.

According to research, one of the biggest regrets people have in life is not being true to themselves. I help people find themselves, re-wire their brain and live a more authentic and aligned life.

I hope this gives you a little idea of my work and who I am, I look forward to working with you!

Ofrezco todos mis servicios en Español.

  • I graduated in 2009 with my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and in 2013 with my Master’s in Community Counseling. I graduated believing I had all the tools I needed to help others and soon realized I didn’t know as much as I thought.

My internship served as a grounding experience in understanding that if I really wanted to help others, I had to commit to be a life-long learner. This realization has led me to be on the journey of constant self-discovery, as well as knowledge and skill acquisition. I have training in Trauma from the Arizona Trauma Institute, I’m trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting I & II, Safe and Sound Protocol, and I’m a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) in training. I’m also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arizona and a National Certified Counselor.

Through training, reading, and doing my personal work, I’ve come to understand that everything about human beings makes sense when we understand it in the context of their life experiences.

Through understanding the brain, mind, and body, I help people make sense of their automatic body reactions, responses, body sensations, thoughts, and behaviors. When someone starts understanding that everything about them is a product of their current wiring, which is based on genes and life experiences (including familial, societal and cultural), they can begin building more compassion towards themselves, gain the tools they need to change, and create lasting change.

  • I have experience working in the area of addiction prevention. Previously, I worked at the Instituto de Psiquiatría de Baja California (Baja California Institute of Psychiatry), offering group therapy with a CBT approach oriented towards psychoeducation, social skills development, problem-solving, assertive communication, positive parenting, and addiction prevention in children, adolescents, and adults.

In addition, I had the opportunity to conduct an internship at a domestic violence shelter. My mission was to develop a safe environment for the victim and children with a history of severe domestic violence through psychological care, safety plan, detection of risk and protection factors, and development of support networks. Later, my internship continued in a group home for displaced boys in Mexico. I provide psychological care to help them have a better quality of life and a better future.

On a side note, I love traveling. I have had the opportunity to live in the Netherlands for three years, which allowed me to visit different countries and learn about their cultures, customs, and ways of thinking. I like learning about each country's cultural riches and its people. I consider myself reliable, humble, sensitive, and interested in looking for each person's strengths without stereotypes or prejudices.

My work will be supervised by Mily Gomez and I hope to expand my knowledge in trauma, somatic interventions, and attachment.
